Kansas Dairy Industry

"A vital contributor to Kansas' economy"

The dairy industry in Kansas is more than milk. It's jobs and economic activity for the people of our state. Kansas is home to 110,000 milk cows, on a mixture of large and small dairy farms -- both of which contribute to the local economy by supporting local businesses and the community tax base.
  • Kansas ranks 16th in the U.S. for milk production. Kansas dairies produce 50,000 loads of milk annually, worth more than $350 million.
  • Dairies infuse Kansas' economy with significant dollars from other states, as 81% of Kansas milk is sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
  • Dairies create a ripple effect on the rural economies of Kansas. Every dollar spent by a dairy is returned to the local economy three to five times through the purchases of feed, supplies, equipment and services.
  • Dairies offer jobs on the farm and throughout the industry in areas including trucking, breeding services and sales, repair services; and veterinary, pharmaceutical, nutrition and other consulting services.
